Archived from groups: alt>motorcycle>sportbike (more info?)

Just had to say that. I'm a relative newbie, only been riding for
about a year. I know that someday I may want a different bike, the
only other motorcycles I've ever been on are my Honda dirt bike and
the little 250's they had at the MSF class I took to get my license
last year, so I don't have a lot to compare the Suzuki to. But for
the kind of riding I do, it's just hard to imagine how I could be any
happier with a different bike.

There are only three very minor problems I have with the SV. Two were
easily solved. First, the stock seat was simply unusable, I had to
switch it out for a Corbin seat. Second, the lack of any kind of
windshield made the wind buffeting at even moderate highway speeds
pretty annoying. A Givi windshield fixed that issue. The only thing
left is the fact that the bike is just a tiny bit cramped for someone
with a 35 inch inseam. I wonder if the SV1000 would solve that
problem? Surely I must be able to come up with a reason to buy a new
bike!

You might try some Super Pole pegs. With those, you can move the pegs an
inch in any direction. In your case, you could move the pegs down to give
you more legroom while riding, but you might give up some cornering
clearance if you get into extreme lean angles. The Super Poles can be had
for around $55 last time I checked, from places like AZMotorsports, or maybe
Lockhart Phillips. They didn't list them for the SV, but the ones for the
GSXR600 fit my SVS just fine (had to put a spacer on the back side, though).<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Its alot more trouble but I drilled and tapped my lower frame and
rebolted the pegs down 3" and forward 2" thats nice... I drag pegs
with 1/8" chicken strip on the front sometimes...but thats with the
long nut below the tip of the peg...I can saw the end of the peg off
1/2 an inch and be hard pressed to drag on the street... the track
would no doubt be a different story. but you have be careful to keep
your feetsies back on the pegs or you can catch a toe and end up with
you foot and whats left of yer ankle wraped aound the peg... that a
problem of course.

but its 500% more comfortable and Ive gotten used to moving my feet
back on the pegs in tight turns.

I had to remount my brake light switch and shorten the shift rod
(sawed it in the middle and used JB weld inside a threaded coupling to
make the splice... quick cheap and strong enough.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I can attest that the SV650 is a nifty little sleeper. When I say sleeper, I
mean a lot people don't know how good that bike is. Well, last Sunday, I had
the pleasure of following and ex-racer through the twistees. I could barely
keep him in sight! Smile I don't think the SV650 is made to be a comfortable
bike. I take this from the way I saw the ex-racer sling that sucker through
the tight twistees with ease.

If you are looking for comfort, you might have faired better on something
else. Just my opinion.

I am considering a sv650, how do you like its preformance. I am 5'10 and

I'm looking at picking up an SV650 myself. I've been riding in the
dirt for close to 20 years so I'm not a total rookie - but I haven't
been on a street bike in well over 10 years. All my sport-bike riding
friends say it'd be good bike for me.. I do realize street riding is
MUCH MUCH different than the dirt and I will be taking the MSF course
before I plunk down any cash.

Any thoughts to the contrary??<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Not really. The SV650 is a very good bike and if you have been riding over
10 years you shouldn't have any problems at all with that "tune up" at the
MSF course.
Just remember SIPDE because it is the one big difference between riding in
the dirt and on the street. On the street 'they are out to get
you"..........<S>

1. Scan
2. Identify potential problems ( car make a left turn )
3. Predict what the conflicting traffic may do
4. Decide what you are going to do to avoid the conflict
5. Execute.........

Always figure that the guy trying to make that left turn in front of will do
it. That will keep you safe most of the time. When you come to a stop in
traffic , point the nose of your bike to one side of the other of the car in
front of you and watch your mirrors for the guy coming up behind you. My
one accident in 35 years of riding was getting clobbered from behind at a
red light because I hadn't watched my mirrors. I almost always do these
days.

Good luck with the new bike. I've had 3 SV 650's over the years and liked
them all.

Personally, I think even when I'm in my 22' long F350, 'they are out
to get me'. Amazingly, I've been rear ended 3 times in this thing.
It's nearly 8' tall at the roof and the top of the tailgate is well
over 5'.. I don't see how people can miss me in the thing, but in
every instance, after the knuckleheads bounce off the trailer hitch,
they tell me, "I never saw you." Huh??

You sound like my helicopter instructor.. I wonder how that
"situational awareness" will translate over.. Kinda funny becasue I'm
looking to get the bike to get TO my helo lessons. The school just
relocated from 3 miles away to over 40 miles away and at 9mpg, me and
my truck can't afford that drive 3 times/week.

I do appreciate the advice and with definitely have my head on a
swivel at all times. Habit born of riding the open desert I think.
I've been surprised by everything from jack rabbits to drunken idiots
in dune buggies and even an ultralight (Game out of a blind canyon at
low level just as I passed the opening)

I'm thinking about renting a 250 for my cycle endorsement test instead
of taking the 650 down. Good/bad idea??<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Good advice. I'll pass on my one tidbit that has made all the difference,
bestowed upon me by my MSF instructor many years ago. Before you throw a leg
over your bike, before you start it up, before you hit the street, get it in
your head that every person and car that you will see during that ride will
intentionally try to kill you. It's paranoia, but it will keep you alive.

hehe, I think that very same thing about surgeons flying V-tail

Too bad you're in SD - I'm on the other side of the US. I run a scooter
shop, & we routinely rent our 250cc scooter for the m/c test. Haven't had a
person yet who said they should have taken the test on a bigger bike. Can't
stall the engine, easy to ride, no gears, small, lightweight, nimble -
definitely go with a 250 if you can, and I highly recommend a scooter. Yeah,
I know what we sportbikers say about scooters, but they serve a purpose too.
