Post subject: HELP 1980 XS650 LEAKING GAS FROM CARBS

I HAVE A 1980 XS650 WITH BS34 MIKUNI CARBS. I WAS LEAKING GAS BACK INTO AIR FILTER FROM LEFT HAND CARB WHEN BIKE SAT IDLE AFTER RIDING. SO I THOUGHT I WOULD JUST REBUILD THEM. GOT CARBS BACK ON BIKE IT FIRED UP RAN FOR A WHILE AND ADJUSTED IDLE. BUT BEFORE I ADJUSTED CARBS I HAD TURNED IT OFF TO TURN BIKE AROUND FACING OUT, AND I NOTICED I WAS LEAKING GAS. IT WAS LEAKING FROM NOW RIGHT HAND CARB THIS TIME. TOOK CARBS BACK OFF AND RE ADJUSTED FLOATS.
BOTH STILL LEAK GAS NOW.
NOW AFTER BENCH TESTING FROM BOTH CARBS I HAVE LOWERED FLOATS BY INCREASING FLOAT DISTANCE BUT STILL LEAKS.
I HAVE DOUBLE CHECKED FLOAT SEAT (BY USING A POINTED 3/16 DOWEL ROD SLIGHTLY POINTED,I SMOOTHED OUT SEAT IN CASE OF BURR AND REPLACED NEEDLES IN BOTH CARBS.) STILL LEAKS!
LOOKS LIKE GAS IS COMING OUT OF BOTH UPPER HOLES IN BELL HOUSING ON CARB INTAKE , ALMOST LIKE OVERFLOW.
IS THIS A FLOAT ISSUE OR AM I OFF BASE AND HAVING OTHER ISSUES.

BOUGHT 4 CARB REBUILD KIT: REPLACED THEM TWICE.

KIT (1980-84) stock Mikuni 34mm. CV carbs
Kit Contains : Push-in Float Valve assembly with O-Ring, Carb rubber passage Plug & Float bowl Gasket

2 NEW PLASTIC FLOATS AND PINS
ALSO REPLACED GAS VALVE ON TANK IN CASE THIS WAS PROBLEMATIC.

MADE THESE CHANGES TO BOOST PREFORMANCE:
#135.0 Main Jet (Pr.) Lg. Round type (48-0119) FROM STOCK OEM #132.5
Main Jet Washer - 80-84 CV Carbs (48-0199) added for better fit
#45.0 Pilot Jets - FROM STOCK OEM 42.5
Needle Jet - 336 YO STOCK ON CANADIAN 1980 FROM STOCK OEM Y.O
Jet Needle - 5IX11 STOCK ON CANADIAN 1980 FROM STOCK OEM 5HX12.

ANY INSIGHT WHY THESE ARE LEAKING WOULD BE VERY APPRECIATED - DROPAQUE

read all insights on the web about leaking, and decided something wrong with plastic floats. The tabs were way off and still leaking. I reshaped old brass floats and and readjusted level. Been holding gas for a week on the bench, no leaking. Installed today adjusted carbs and synched. All is good. Put about 30 miles on it . no problems. It was the plastic floats.-dropaque
