Lose a bunch of weight. Remarkable how much better the old bikes go
and stop these days.
Thinking they just aren't too agreeable for fat people. A sad but
true conclusion, lo these many years of riding both fat, thin, and
somewhere in the middle.
Now it's time to build some bulk specifically for riding. Any book
recommendations? I don't like gyms, coaches, teams, or any of that
rot. Clanking barbells are a close runner-up on the Bannon curmudgeon
scale, so maybe some isometrics: push-ups, pull-ups, and sit-ups come
to mind.
Old Jamin bought a Soloflex, I hear. That's an option, too, if I can
find somewhere to put it. I get plenty of aerobic exercise on the
NordicTrack. Now it's time for muscle.

Any book
> recommendations?
I don't have a book recommendation but I treadmill everyday for 20
minutes at the 4.0 rate or I skip lunch...
I've dropped 4 pounds since Jan 1 2004... my goal is 16 more... coupled
with a 20 pound lighter carbon fiber fairing... Mr.RC45's burden will be
40 pounds less... acceleration will be up and I'll have more of that "Oh
Snap" feel...

40 lbs is a lot in the turns too.
Flickability will be way up
Im doing golds gym myself, concentrating on building dense muscle (boxers
muscle, not a lot of bulk)...so Im getting denser and thicker muscle now,
but no weight loss. I was not very strong. I had to start with 20 lbs on
some of the machines (now Im up to 60 on those),,,and the ones I started at
50 lbs, Im up to 100 lbs.
I still need to double those numbers...the rest of the gain will go at about
7% a month. So it will be year before I start getting into the moderately
strong category... but thats what its going to take to muscle the flat
tracker around a half mile main event.

pilates? yoga?
great way to build core-strength without the possible injuries from pumping
traditional iron.
a beginners pilates dvd takes up as much room as your beloved collectors
copy of LOTR (complete with cut scenes)
so, storage isn't an issue... and when the guys come over you can stash it
with all the porn under your bed.. so nobody is wise to how you got those
amazing abs!!

I am doing Golds Gym... using the machines. Not free weights.. if you do the
machines (they have maybe 30 different types)... its fun actually...and in
no time you want to add more weight... I have been going for about 10 weeks
now, and Ive more than doubled the weight I work out with, and its showing
reasonably well caross the chest and shoulders and legs.
I had always hated gyms previously... today they are clean, smell
clean...and they have really hot machines and a lot of interesting
people..Golds has a co-ed sauna...thats a hoot. I try to get the girls to
leave thier tops on though, my heart cant stand too much excitement...but
its getting better.
Just having one machine at home I think is both too limiting, and too much
of a hassle... also with others in the gym its somehow motivating...and you
can learn a lot and ask others all sorts of questions.

Gonna have to do it the ol fashion way....earn it. Your going to have to
pick up some weights.

.... for christmas, i bought my brother the two
books that follow - his feedback is very positive
for the both of them. he said that although the
two are from the same author, the content is
different enough to compliment each other:

Lou Schuler;Hardcover; $24.50
"Men's Health Home Workout Bible: A Do-It-Yourself
Guide to Burning Fat and Building Muscle"

I design all my workouts with these two books:
Strength Training Anatomy by Frederic Delavier
<http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0736041850/qid=1078945241/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/104-0612066-4608761>
Getting Stronger by Bill Pearl
<http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0936070242/qid=1078945405/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-0612066-4608761?v=glance&s=books>
In my opinion, these books are invaluable for virtually any type of
specialized development program. Between the two books, all modes of
training are covered and explained with easily understood narrative
and illustrations.
Best of luck -- and don't bother with with fuss and cost of an
expensive Soloflex. You'll get better results by purchasing a
29-dollar bench and 40 bucks worth of plates and bars.

I'll second this. a couple months of Pilates made a huge difference in my
riding endurance. i have a couple of beginner video tapes. if you have a
VHS player, they're yours.

Forget the muscle....Go cardio.
Running will enhance every aspect of your life.
Not NY marathon or CorprOlymics stuff...
Just, 45 minutes or a nice slow three or four miles a day
will bring you changes nothing else will.

20lbs? What they hell did they make that RC45 fairing out of? Hammered
lead? I wonder.... didja actually weigh the difference or are you
quoting marketing babble.
The bodywork they slap on racebikes these days is ultrathin ABS. I
doubt if it's any heavier at all over the carbon stuff.
Yet if you flip through the accessory catalogs, they still spec 5lb.
