Pett Level (Winchelsea Beach) for windswept birdwatching, Dungeness for
suicide contemplation and, depending how that goes, Beachy Head's only
about an hour's drive away.

I'm probably being whooshed, but yes. Few females (with the exception of
my late mum) really get fly-fishing and the lad hasn't got the patience
for it yet. There are times when one must commune with nature, and
return to what Arthur Ransome called stone age pleasures[1], alone.

I prefer Jerome K Jerome's take on it.

"Some people are under the impression that all that is required to
make a good fisherman is the ability to tell lies easily and without
blushing; but this is a mistake. Mere bald fabrication is useless;
the veriest tyro can manage that. It is in the circumstantial detail,
the embellishing touches of probability, the general air of scrupulous
- almost of pedantic - veracity, that the experienced angler is seen."

Maybe you didn't get it.

Are you familiar with the phrase "old trout"?

I'm quite fond of Bibury in the Cotswolds (http://www.bibury.com).

Spendy, but nice,

I thought "elderly matrons" was a reasonable approximation. Matrons
don't have to wear uniform.

Or perhaps you are trying to guess SWMBOs age again?

Unsurprisingly, the last sentence works quite well if you substitute
'troll', for angler. Any nominees?

It's hardly far - definitely less than your 150 mile limit. And it's
not Welsh, either, AFAIK.

i know someone who annually books several weeks off work[1] to go "fishing"
in scotland. this rarely involves anyone else, and despite having a jolly-
boat stocked with whisky[2] and lures, he never catches anything worth
eating or photographing, so it is suspected that such expeditions are
merely a ruse to escape his wife.

Most of it is, since they finally decided Monmouthshire is part of Wales in
1974. It's only the middle section that runs through Herefordshire that is
entirely English. The upper reaches are in Powys and the lower Wye Valley
has Gloucestershire on one side and Monmouthshire on the other.

Places in/near the Wye Valley that are nice:

http://www.crownatwhitebrook.co.uk/home.html just got a Michelin star, 135
miles form London and only about 13 miles from the Old Severn Bridge.

Cheaper option in English part of the Wye Valley:
http://www.theroyal-ross.com/ - one of Greene King's Olde English Inns.
Superb views across meadows to horseshoe bend.

Another gastro pub on the Monnow tributary to the Wye. Very rural location,
lots of castles in the area. 131 miles to London. Located on a superb
biking road from Ross to Abergavenny. Michelin pub of the year 2007 and AA
5 stars http://www.skenfrith.co.uk/
Castles here: http://www.castlewales.com/
