Rye's gorgeous at this time of year. No tourists for a start.
Brilliant pubs, sublime fish & chips, and just time-warp, as you say.
I'm biased because Ma lives there, mind. You've got the beach at Rye
Harbour for long romantic strolls, plnety of hotels and B&Bs to shag
in, a decent choice of restaurants to eat in, some very good junk and
antique shops, and the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Light Railway a few
miles away.

I was about to suggest North Norfolk...

Too many dodgy, pissed-up archers around, IWHT.

How about the Jurassic Coast, Dorset?

Suffolk is worth a visit too IMO. Orford Castle is terribly atmospheric.
Southwold for the Adams and Framlingham Castle (now famous for being
visited by Jeremy Paxman's forbears).

Otherwise if fresh, flowing water would do consider the Wye valley.

TD (TD ) gurgled happily, sounding much like
they were saying:

If the "near water" is negotiable, how about the Peak District? There's a
River Wye there, too...

Seconded. See if you can get a hotel in the old part of Lyme Regis.

Then get your gf to walk out on the cob, and take a photo of her
looking wistfully out to sea, a la "French Lieutenant's Woman".

We went for a day trip last whitsun. SWMBO and the lad rode their bikes
part of the way round whilst I flicked a fly in the direction of
contemptuous trout.

Carsington Water, and a convenient pub nearby.
