You could try picking a station somewhere between the two and pricing
singles from London to there and there to Manchester.

Try your local station first, I've given up using the web site to buy
tickets, you can never get the cheaper ones online.

My Mum was travelling up for Christmas here - Stevenage to York.
Cheapest online £40, in the station, £10.52.

This is true, however...

I think it was first great western who frequently used to have their
cheap tickets available for a whole 12 hours - if you tried to book the
tickets before noon on the day they became available, you were told
"those tickets have not yet been released", and by the end of that day,
the price had doubled.
