Archived from groups: rec>motorcycles (more info?)

Hi all,

I'm new to this board and I'm starting off with a question.

Like one of your members in a previous post, I'm in the market for a
sport tourer and have narrowed my choices down to the Triumph Sprint ST
and the Honda Intruder.
The insurance issue has also pushed me to the Sprint and I really do
like this bike but I'm concerned about the reports of excessive heat
from the engine and exhaust.
Since the 05's are sold out wherever I look, I'm planning on getting an
06 model. The sprint has more power than the Interceptor and I don't
completely trust the Interceptor's VTEC engine.
I'm sitting here ready to make the call to my dealer to order the
Sprint but the heat issue bothers me. I live in Mississippi, less than
two miles from the Gulf of Mexico. In other words, summers can get
pretty hot. I'd hate to buy the Triumph only to find out I'm unable to
take the heat produced by the bike.

Any words of wisdom? I wish I could find a Sprint to take for about a
twenty minute test ride so I can see how much heat I'm dealing with.

Thanks for any advice you can offer,
Paul

I rode the Honda ST1300. It was a very nice bike but I didn't like the
upright posture. I was eye-to-eye with SUV's. I'm more comfortable
with a slight forward lean. The FJR seems to have the same riding
position.
I've been looking at a number of bikes. The Suzuki Katana was one
choice. I used to have a 750 and liked it but the technology doesn't
seem to have been updated.

I'm open to suggestions though.
Still shopping,
Paul

Funny. Just as long as they don't throw out their Starbuck's cups at
me.

The ST1300 is a very nice bike but the Sprint ST, Honda Interceptor and
Katana are a little cheaper.
I've been riding a cruiser for the past year. A friend talked me into
getting one. I thought it would be more comfortable but it's not. My
Katana was more comfortable and less wind. I'm getting my donkey
kicked at highway speeds. I rode that Katana from North Carolina to
Mississippi and enjoyed it.

I need to ride a Sprint ST to see. Why is it so hard to test ride
motorcycle but a car salesman would throw the keys to my dog and tell
him to enjoy.

Triumph Dealers are usually pretty good about test rides.

I'm a pilot and I'm on the road for eight days so I'm going to print up
the dealer directory. I should be able to find one somewhere in the
U.S. that will let me take one for ten to twenty minutes.

Wish me luck.

I looked at the Kawasaki Concours. It has the same riding profile as
the Honda ST1300 and the FJR1300.
It also looks pretty outdated. I'd like to get things like fuel
injection for my money.

The Katana I used to have would get pretty hot when sitting at a light
or riding slow in the summer. Does anyone have experience with the
Katana and the Sprint to compare the heat we are talking about?

Thanks for the link. That is an option for the problem of heat under
the seat and along the right leg where the riser passes right next to
the peg.

Those stock pipes too look great like they are though.

You should ride the FJR, really.

I still don't know what you are looking for, but why not try a hyabusa
or other road burner? Look up corbin for what models they have
beetlebags for and you can retro a rocket into a hard bag touring bike.

Check Givi as well for bags.

You need to review all the aspects of these bikes. The sprint might be
lacking in areas you are not considering.

(yes, the concours is horribly dated, but cheap as hell)

Hey Cam, how long did you ride the ST? Did have a problem with the
heat?

I rode the Honda ST1300 and can't see how the FJR is much different.
It's also a little more expensive than I was hoping to pay. Us poor
pilots have to count our pennies, you know. (The ST1300 was used).

I definitely don't need a Hyabusa. Too much bike for what I'm doing
and too many cops to catch me if I'm tempted to take advantage of that
bike's performance.

I'm looking for a bike that has:
* decent performance
* a ride profile that gives me about 60 degrees of ride angle as
opposed to the ST1300's 90 degrees(angle of my back to road)
* full fairings for wind protection
* comfort for three hour or longer rides
and, yes, I'm sure there are other areas I'm leaving out.

I'll keep my options open until the papers are signed and I'm riding
__________(place appropriate bike name here) home.

Well, the FJR is a freaking rocket, for one. The adjustable windshield
is fantastic (wind in face, wind over helmet, wind in face, wind over
helmet). The seating is upright, but more front lean that you think.
Used FJRs are out there. I find the ST1300 a little bland. I sold my
ST1100 to get my fjr.

You don't HAVE to use it. How about a Honda CBRXX? fast, lean forward,
rock solid, bunch of used ones around. Can fit some heli bars to get
less lean angle.

Well, I don't know of any bike that is all of the above. I can't ride 3
hours on a bike with most of my weight on the front bars. I doubt you
will find a bike that can go 3+ hours without stopping for gas (other
than the FJR and ST1300). Most bikes with the sporty angle are not the
best weather protectors unless tucked.

I was in the same spot you were 5 years ago. I was going to do the
Aprillia futura route, but the lack of dealers worried me, I didn't
like the triumphs, and the FJR was still years away. I bought a ST1100
and like it a lot. Once I had a taste of the FJR I sold the ST1100 at
the drop of the hat.

That is a first. Someone who wants to lean forward more on a ST1300. SUV
drivers tend to notice you more if you can spit right in their eye.
