The stock market soars to new highs on the basis of a "great" jobs
report. What apparently goes unnoticed is the details of the report:
1. The manufacturing sector lost 18,000 jobs in the latest report.
2. Construction also saw a 14,000 reduction in jobs.
3. The sector of financial services that includes mortgage lenders cut
12,000 jobs.
4. Most of the big upward revision in the August payroll reading was
due to a different estimate of government hiring, which is now
estimated to have added 57,000 jobs in the month.
So this is just great. We now have an additional 57k gov't workers to
provide for with an additional 50k of new poodle groomers and massage
therapists jobs. Surely those new positions will turn our enormous
trade deficit around. Why I'll bet the Chinese can't make ocean
liners fast enough to hold all of their people who are lined up to
come to America for their happy ending.
You people who are contemplating a bike had better get on with it,
while our money is still accepted on the world market. >> Stay informed about: Economic Twilight Zone |

That's a great point. I'd estimate that we only have about another
14-18 months of prosperity left. >> Stay informed about: Economic Twilight Zone |

It sure doesn't go unnoticed if an amateur like you notices it easily.

And with the subprime mess, its going to get worse.

Depends on whether or not the goobermint casts as wide a net when it labels
its hiring as you do. According to you, local school teachers belong to the
goobermint.

You have suggestions for what we should be manufacturing in a global
environment? Its obvious we can't do cages very well....maybe you want to
reclaim the TV manufacturing market?

The dollar is going to be devalued, no doubt about it. We're going to get
what we deserve...sure as shootin. I think Stephan is right, we've got a
decent recession coming, as well as higher interest rates in general because
of all the goobermint borrowing. >> Stay informed about: Economic Twilight Zone |

One might also want to remember that this FY's federal borrowing was
far less than projected, and far less than average since 1969, and was
the lowest as a percentage of GDP since 9/11.
Otoh, it's far more FUN to play the role of Chicken Little on usenet.
Meanwhile, my house is almost paid for, it's worth six times what I
paid for it 26 years ago, and my retirement assets are at all-time
record levels while my contributions are at the legal maximums for all
accounts.
Oh, yeah. And I eat out a lot.

Its not like its invisible, its just one of those things. We can only borrow
for so much for so long before we've got to become a saving nation....it'll
cause a global recession of some sort, particularly for the countries which
are following the Japanese export model of how to run an economy, when the

I understand that to you, pointing out FACTS that don't fit your
blissfully ignorant view of the world is unnerving. I'll try to stick

Hmm, considering that those handy little brown people won't be given
citizenship, SS, or much in the way of rights - I'd wouldn't consider
the admin's move to be "right."
But on a funnier note, I recently heard it stated that America's
greatest and most popular international export has become "hip hop
culture." Unfortunately, all the clothes, cd's, movies, and popular
phrases that surround it don't generate much domestic revenue.... >> Stay informed about: Economic Twilight Zone |

Unfortunate, but true. I spent about a year hanging out with the worst of
the Doomers, people who are stocking their basements with canned goods,
waiting for the gas rationing to begin, the oxygen to run out, the EMP to
explode over SoCal, and on and on. Most of it seems like a means to rid the
world of people they don't like, aren't their color or nationality, etc etc.
Disguised discrimination, not alot more.

I try not to eat out alot. And I could do better on the retirement
contributions, but I've got kids in their "wonder years" and firmly believe
in doing stuff with them now if at all possible. Maybe when they don't want
to travel around randomly with their old man anymore. >> Stay informed about: Economic Twilight Zone |

FACT: The federal government registered a budget deficit of $161
billion for the just-completed fiscal year, the Congressional Budget
Office estimated. The previous year's deficit was $248 billion. The
fiscal 2007 deficit was equivalent to 1.2 percent of gross domestic
product, the lowest since 2001, when the government had a budget
surplus.
(SOURCE: WASHINGTON POST NEWSPAPER, BUSINESS BRIEFING
Saturday, October 6, 2007; Page D14)
FACT: Last year the Congrssional Budget Office predicted a 2007 fiscal
deficit of $270 billion. In January, 2007, the CBO reduced that
projection to $172 billion.
(SOURCE: Congrssional Budget Office )
FACT: The budget deficit now stands at about 1.4 percent of the
nation's GDP, well below the 2.3 percent that's been the norm since
1970
(SOURCE: Economist Michael Darda of MKM Partners in Greenwich, Conn.
"At the current pace, the budget could move back into surplus as early
as May 2008," Mr. Darda wrote in a report to clients last week.)
> > Otoh, it's far more FUN to play the role of Chicken Little on usenet.

FACT: I am not the one calling the longest peacetime expansion of the
economy, new records for the stock market, growing federal tax
receipts, post-world war II record low inflation, and a declining
deficit, an "economic twilight zone." I am not the one predicting a
third world economy for the United States. I am not the one decrying
the loss of every single nut and bolt screwing job in the U.S.
economy. I am the one presenting well researched FACTs to counteract
such hysterical nonsense.
> > Meanwhile, my house is almost paid for, it's worth six times what I

> Unfortunately, the dollar is probably worth seven times less.
FACT: The dollars I bought my house with in 1981 would be worth $2.26
each today; not $7.00.
SOURCE: Federal Reserve Bank, Inflation Calculator
FACT: That means, that AFTER adjusting for inflation, my house has
appreciated at an average of 4.15% each year I've lived in it.
SOURCE: Simple math.

proven yourself ignorant.

Of course. But if they don't want to work any more than the average
backwoods cracker, they are nothing more than a drag on the economy.
Worse...because they are legal, they can WHINE and we can't even ship them
back to somewhere else.

And if they disagree with your version of "employment", what then? They
whine some more, and lots of cheap, possibly illegal labor flows in for the
"decent wage" which some inner city slum dweller doesn't consider enough
because its not as much as some rap star he emulates, and of COURSE he/she
deserves it. I think its all a screwed up sense of what people think they
are "owed".
