I called the dealership today, they looked at the top end of the motor
and have already found metal shavings. Don't know yet though what broke
where so they're currently working on taking the entire engine out so
that they can take it apart.

I'll post updates as I get them...

Sorry to hear that, Stephan. Hope it's not too $$$painful$$$. At
least it's the bike, and not your health!

Hopefully just aluminum shavings from the cam chain guide... that's a drag
though.

Stephan, do you have an external warrenty or any of the original left
on your bike. Seeing it's a dealer, it's going to run over $1,000.00
to fix it. Or maybe they have a boxed rebuilt engine from Japan they
sell? At any rate, sorry to hear of your misfortune.

Sorry about your luck Stephan. You've got me wondering though, has ANYONE
here ever actually had an engine FAIL just spontaneously? I've been hanging
around here a long time and darned if I can remember one.....

Lets bet...whoever did your prior engine work didn't quite do it as well as
they should.

Well, you can't think the equivalent to US Dealer here in Germany.
Independent Repair shops, both Car and Motorcycle, are extremely rare and
far and few in between and chains such as Jiffy Lube, Tire Kingdom, etc.
don't exist at all. Dealers here in Germany don't have the bad Image they
do in the US.

One of the interesting differences between the US and Germany. =)

The original warranty has long expired, but there is one thing I can hope
for. Since they did recently replace the timing chain and everything
related to it, it's not impossible that they made a mistake there and
that the engine failure is a result of that. If that's the case, it'll be
their responsibility and money to fix it.

Seeing how it's recently been replaced, quite possible.

Thanks Tim. Yea, I have to say that the bike handled extremely well when
that rear locked up. I actually didn't feel endangered at any moment, I
do have to give it credit for that.

I guess I am somewhat lucky though that it didn't happen in the middle of
a turn with me leaned over. Now that would have hurt...

Good bet.

I'll always remember the time our local Honda shop checked the valves on my
VFR, and when I got it back it wouldn't run for more than three minutes
before it starved out and quit. Only way you could get it to keep running
was to pop the gas cap every few miles, and I could hear it sucking into the
tank air every time the cap opened...

Naturally I took it back down to Honda with blood in my eye, where the
service advisor told me "It couldn't be anything *we* did to it. We didn't
work on the fuel system."

Before I could even begin to ream his ass, the mechanic who'd worked on my
bike walked past and said "Got a problem with your bike?", and when I told
him what the symptoms were he said "Whoops! I know what I did wrong!", took
the bike inside, and brought it back in about five minutes; working fine.

Seems that he'd accidentally kinked the smog system line running down below
the gas tank, and it was forming a vacuum in the tank after it ran for a few
minutes and that starved the fuel pump. Great oaks from little acorns grow.

The good news was that the sleazy service advisor lost his gig shortly
thereafter, and the bad news was that the honest mechanic left for a better
job offer in Montana.
