Anyone help with this?
The DVDs I burn are fine, picture-wise, but for some odd reason when you
switch to Dolby Pro Logic very little comes out of the rear speakers.
Sounds fine, just very "front-weighted". I'm talking here about stuff
I've recorded from Sky One via Sky DigiBox.
I thought Pro Logic was just a clever way of splitting a normal stereo
signal into more channels? I confess to knowing nothing on this one, so
any help gratefully received.
The HDD/DVD burner is a Pioneer DVR-420H, and I play the DVDs back
through a Toshiba widescreen TV and separate Toshiba DVD player (SD-
230E).

Pro logic simply filters out certain frequencies to the rear speakers,
you very rarely get anything from the rear (ahem). The most common thing
to come out the rear is the studio audience.

No, sorry, but there's definitely more rear-bias (fner fner) in the
original programme. I noticed this when watching "Long Way Round"; the
bike engine sounds punch out of the rears much more on the original
programme then with the DVD I've burnt.

Dunno. DVD-R, is that what you mean?
Anyway, I thought Dolby Pro Logic was pseudo-surround based on 2
channels?
Do educate me, please.

Correct, Dolby Surround is transmitted and recorded using a stereo
pair.
I did have a think about your original question but nothing obvious
struck me. It should work as you assumed. If there was a phase
crossover then this might cause a problem with the surround channel —
but I can't see how you could get this in your cabling which is
presumably a SCART cable?

Yep [1]
[1] apart from Tosh TV to Tosh DVD player, which is what looks like 3
high quality, gold plated phono cables; left, right and video?

This is a puzzler.
How is the Digi box connected to the DVD recorder?
How is the Digi-box connected to the TV?
How is the DVD playing device connected to the tv?
Possibly problems could be caused byt duff connection in one audio channel
from the digi-box. Also, if the Digi-box and player connect to different
audio inputs on the TV, it could be that either the TV will not do PL
decoding from the DVD input, or the TV is bust some way, or the cable from
the DVD is faulty, or the player itself is faulty.

I'm guessing the latter, as it plays pre-recorded DVDs fine, in fact it
all seems to work fine *apart* from when I record something. Don't get
me wrong, the sound er ... sounds fine. It's just not going into Dolby
Pro Logic mode. Or doesn't appear to be.

There's something about this buzzing in the back of my mind. I've had
this problem, but not with DVDs obviously and a while ago. If it
forms itself into a cogent thought I'll let you know, but I'd be
checking the scart leads by substitution iiwy.
I have a surround sound test and check CD if you'd like to borrow it.

To be perfectly honest I can't really be arsed ATM, but point taken and
cheers ... could you do me a favour and see what that "Long Way Round"
DVD I've sent to Loz sounds like on your setup when it arrives? [1]
> I have a surround sound test and check CD if you'd like to borrow it.
I've done the sound test as per the TV/DVD *player* setup and through
the recorder as well and it appears fine, it's just on playback from
something recorded on the recorder that I've noticed this, but I may
well take you up on that thanks
[1] should be there Monday/Tuesday, but our post room at work is staffed

Ok, I've had another thought. Is it your tv that does the Pro Logic
decoding or a separate decoder/amp?
Whatever it is, does it show when it's in Pro Logic mode? A possibilty
is that the recording is ok but the flag on the DVD that says it's Pro
Logic isn't set so the auto detect doesn't work for recordings.
You should be able to force the tv/amp into Pro Logic decoding mode (if
it isn't already).

Video Essentials is great for this[1], it walks you through setting up
the audio and video in your DVD playback system.
<a rel="nofollow" style='text-decoration: none;' href="http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=121810" target="_blank">http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=121810</a>
[1] Although it's not something most people use very often so something
borrowed could well be favourite.

Assuming this is a different SCART to the digi>TV connection, I'd look here.
