I've got an '03 PW50, about 6 months old, and about 50 hours riding time on
it. About 3-4 weeks ago, I noticed a "pinging" or rattling noise coming
from the cylinder. Thought maybe it was running too lean but it checked out
OK. Then I thought it was the fuel so I switched to a 93 octane...still
pinging. Compression checks at around 115-120 psi. I removed the head and
jug and decarburized the piston crown and head and checked for signs of
scoring....didn't find any. I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions greatly
appreciated.

Probably piston slap. Check the clearance of the piston skirt to cylinder.

You didn't mention if you checked the timing. I think if it is too advanced
it can cause pinging.

Also be very sure that the cylinder is in fact the place making the noise
and that it isnt being "referred" from somewhere else. I was looking at a
used y-zinger a week or so ago, and now that you mention it, this one was
making a noise too. sounded like it was coming from the cylinder but in
fact was being made by the clutch. After warming it up, i lifted the back
end up and ran it in gear for a bit. The noise seemed to diminish, does
yours?
