Not the earth science guys I hang out with. Unless they've got PhD's in
economics, stats, or engineering. But there is this paleontologist who is
slick as snot when it comes to math...but he didn't pick that up in school.

You betcha. Hanging out with smart people has been the best thing thats ever
happened to me, learning wise.

Engineering is applied math...and science. Wrap the two up into a single
mess and presto!! Enguneers. But really, I know bunches of PhD's and
seriously, no one required them to take any more math than what the standard
undergrad did.

For engineering, you probably get exposed to the same math as an undergrad,
however, you apply it so much more that many of the more advanced concepts
become second nature. It is kinda like how by the time you get your
undergrad degree, basic algebra and calculus have become ingrained into
your mind, but your understanding of solving non-linear diffQs isn't
all that mature.

The physics PhDs really seem to get a very broad math foundation. Granted,
a lot of that math isn't really applicable to most real world engineering
problems (that I deal with, at least), but the exposure they have seems like
a real benefit.

I was considering (in fact it was proposed to me many years ago) to
pursue the computer science PhD program which I could easily finish. But
it never was so attractive to me for many reasons. Maybe I will
reconsider it in a few years.

PhD seems to be more about learning how to research then anything else.
Less about the art of discovering things sort of speak.
And even yet less about the art of coming up with real technical solutions.

And I know a few PhD working as not a scientist but engineers.
There many good engineers which easily outperform them.

There are a lot of PhD's in Madison. A few teach at the University,
but most of them drive Taxi....

thx, but I am not perfect either.

My life has made full lean sliding turn finished with high side
recently. And no one knows where I will end up - could be Denver,
Phoenix or somewhere in California. Will see soon.

1st the bike is not "brand new" (5K miles) but the dealer showed me
the empty Castrol R4 bottle they used to change the oil at 5K miles
from new & the oil is clear so I've no reason to doubt him.
That's about as good a 4 cycle oil as it gets for me. I ran my Sprint
ST on the Triumph Castrol R4T4 stuff at 150 ind and close quite a bit
and never had any engine problems. Plus 4 times at the track and I
sold it with 55K miles and the engine was quieter than new and didn't
burn oil.

Second, if I change coolant it will be to pure "engine ice" (no mixing
with water) or "Propylene Glycol" as it reduces cylinder head
cavitation and detonation potential with a boiling point of >300F with
-0- preesure. The freezing point (~-40f) is higher than regular
etholyne Glycol 50/50 mix but in AZ who cares? It's also a better
thermal conductor than the alcohol based stuff and is invirnmentally
friendly, won't kill animals if they drink it. It is expensive though
at about $12 quart. BTW, it's track friendly as well (not slick)
