I only stayed for a night, first time here
http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/hrgeg-hurghada-marriott-beach-resort/
which is a pretty good hotel. I went into town by taxi for some beers
and TBH the bars were pretty similar to Sharm IMO

OK they're not hotel standard but they're closer to floating gin
palaces than the liveaboards you'd get in the UK. There's so many
sites that are only accessible from a liveaboard which is the main
reason for comprimising on accommodation.
This is one I was on http://www.tornadomarinefleet.com/news.htm?p=hurricane
although the site seems borked ATM

Not bad, although clearly dependent on what you want from a 'resort'.
We stayed at one of many hotels (in our case, the Intercontinental -
not bad at all) built along the coast to the south of the town, most
of which have their own private beach and some shops, as well as a
choice of restaurants. Nearby (5 mins walk) was a shopping street
offering a wider choice.
Many of them have their own dive centres too, so you only need to cart
your gear to the end of the jetty each time.
The town itself was a bus or taxi ride away, and we only went there a
couple of times in the evening, but it seemed like a lively enough
place, from what we saw. Certainly good for shopping, although I hate
their style of trying to drag you in off the street all the time, and
eventually got to the 'rude' stage whenever anyone tried it.
>SWMBO would'nt appreciate a liveaboard
Too right. A decent air-conditioned hotel room is a minimum
requirement, AFAIAC.

I've done 4 liveaboards out of that side of the sea, from Hurghada to
Marsa Alam and El Quesier. Some were fairly basic, but others were
luxury, with private head, A/C and such like. All of them have all the
food and drink you could want and access to the best dive sites that
either the day trippers can't get to, or get to an hour after you've
finished your dive.
For a diving only holiday, it's hard to be beaten. Of course, this
doesn't take into account non-diving partners, or people who get sea sick. >> Stay informed about: Brrrrr .... |

Steve, if you go to Hurghada, there are private minibuses running constantly
between Hurghada itself and the out-of-town hotels. They operate on a fixed
price basis: check with your hotel what that is at the moment and don't let
the bus driver push the price up for spurious reasons (distance, time of
night, children needing hospital treatment, excess baggage, Ramadan, etc).
If he tries it on, tell him you'll wait for the next one and walk away:
he'll drop the price back to the normal level rather than lose the fare.
And make sure you have the correct change to hand otherwise you'll find he
won't have any and will ask you to wait until you get off to collect it. At
the end of the ride, he magically still won't have any or will deny that he
owes you anything.
And if you take a taxi, agree the fare beforehand!

I wasn't using lost in that sense. It's not like he can retrieve and
restore it.
