In 1999, Ducati replaced the "original" Pantah-descended 750SS and
900SS models with a new 750/900cc replacement.

In 2003, the Ducati 750cc and 900cc air-cooled 2-valve motors were
replaced both in the U.S. and worldwide with their newer 800cc and
1000cc replacements in both the SS (Supersport) and Monster chassis.

In 2003 ONLY, in the U.S. and in Europe, an identically framed,
bodied, and suspended (with minor detail variances) 620cc model called
the 620 Sport was introduced as a replacement for the failed 600SS of
several years earlier, a bike that was never offered in the U.S.

Ducati sold 170 620 Sports worldwide. It was never offered again.

In 2007, the 620cc motor from that model, that had been used in the
Monster 620ie since 2003, was replaced with the 695, essentially using
the newer technology heads from the 800.

Cornfoozling enough for ya? Wink Tim

P.S. Now they have an 1100cc 2-valver in the HyperMotard and the
MultiStrada. Bet it'll be in the top of the line SS and air-cooled
Monster in 2008!

Something U.S. only? Or a 750 with a big bore kit?(or a de-stroked 900?).

You weren't kidding about following Ducati. That's an impressive list
of facts.

I've never had the chance to ride a Duc. But I like the way the
company seems to be going. The mid-sized monsters really appeal to
me, as well as the big sportbikes.

IOW, a MUCH better looking bike!

Yes, the 620 Sport is injected, came stock with dual exhausts. It
shares the chassis (frame, suspension, brakes, bodywork, instruments,
controls) with both the 800SS and the 1000SS, although the 1000SS has
multi-adjustable forks, lighter 5-spoke wheels, and an aluminum
(rather than steel) swingarm. The 800SS was discontinued in the U.S.
for 2007, leaving only the 1000 as the sole surviving SuperSport in
the Ducati lineup.

The 695 equal maybe but factoring in price not really. And a current
(top5% of the production line SV's with a pipe are closer to 80RWHP)
Hell even an average one on the bell curve is ~75HP especially with
the Yosh pipe. All which makes the Ducati dealers statement true in
that it REALLY takes either an 800 or 1000=(current duc models) to
soundly trounce an SV-650 in say a 1/4 mile drag race or top end run.
A close curcuit track is more about the rider so I didn't include that
in my statement.

I think we've beat this one to death, Tim. I can't wait over a year to
see if the Street triple is a viable ride with a nice "low "seat
height, unlike the current 675 with a 33.5" seat height. They
delivered the SV with the triple clamp pushed down ~1" and the rear
preload set down a bit. I can actually flat foot it better than the
little RZ-350.

Finally Tim, would it kill you to be a nice fellah and just say,
congrats or nothing at all. I tried the Duc and found them too damned
expensive & potentially high maintenance for MY needs. So the SV is a
common bike? It has a good reputation and I owned one before so I knew
what I was getting. After the RZ-350 debacle, I wanted something
reliable that I won't have to worry about starting or wrenching on
with one leg and 1/2 a functional heart in this AZ heat. I'll keep and
get the RZ-350 fixed but will never subject it to 100MPH+ runs any
more. That said, I'll end this with an old cliché, "Walk a mile in my
shoes". I went to the trouble of Ducati shooping like you suggested
but it was $$not$$ to be.

Sounds great! Remind me in the Spring and I'm in!

I met the shop owner/staff at the CW Intl. Bike Show in Chicago last
year. Seemed a right nice chap.
