Post subject: Alarm system advice for a vintage 1964 Vespa
Archived from groups: alt>motorcycles, others (more info?)

I've bought 3 days ago a wonderful vintage vespa (year 1964).

I want to buy a very good alarm system that can protect my vespa from:

1. Anyone who try to lift it
2. Anyone who sit on it or touch it
3. Anyone who try to cut off the alarm system

I'm also seeking an alarm system that has a pager that warn me (wherever I
am) in the exact moment the alarm alert turns on.

I'm living in California, so I would like to find a product that is
available in USA.
What do you suggest? Which is the most reliable alarmsystem that has all
the characteristics written above?

Thank you.

Easy alarm:
you need some 12v primary wire 12 gauge
a few wire connectors
1) 12volt alarm buzzer from an electronics store
1) mercury tilt switch - like inside a home thermostat
1) on/off switch rated for the buzzer amperage

run positive wire from battery positive to inline fuse to a hidden
on/off switch then to mercury switch.
mercury switch has to be mounted exactly the right
amount of angle from horizontal
you'll have to try a few angles to get it right
then epoxy it to some hiden part of the bodywork
then finally a wire out from the mercury switch to ground.

you park
turn on the hidden switch
if anyone
> 1. Anyone who try to lift it
> 2. Anyone who sit on it or touch it
it will scream until they leave it alone
and all parts are hidden underneath seat, battery box etc.

I had the same on a honda ST1100
when on side stand it would work
if bike was sat on or attempt to right it up to verticle
it screamed
on center stand it cant work because of the merc switch angle

Wink

It's six. I dunno whether you can get an alarm to sound loud and long
enough on six volts, but I doubt it. And many Vespas from that era
(certainly some sold in the US, like this one: http://www.nohoscooters.com/gs.html)
didn't have batteries anyway.

Dobermann, like I said.

Er, and how many volts do you think a 1964 Vespa puts out, Edison?

it is either 6 volts or 12
look at the battery
most buzzers have an operating voltage range

I'd think the mercury switch would be ruined by vibration during normal
riding.

I bought one of the first commercial bike alarms in 1981. It involved a BB
in a little bowl. It ate itself within months.

I currently use a small disc brake lock with a motion-sensitive 110 db alarm
built in.

Does the 64 Vespa even have a Battery? I had a 58 Vespa back in 64 and it
did not have a battery that I remember (it is tough when you get old you do
tend to forget things).

Disk Brake lock? I do not think a 64 Vespa had disk brakes, I am not even
sure that any motorcycle had disk brakes in 64.

Doesn't need them. If it has a rack that the lock can go across, it'll act
as a motion sensitive alarm. A hole in the bodywork could be utilised, or a
small bracket cobbled on.
