What exactly is Yamaha referring to when they say to use solvent
to clean a foam air filter?
What type of oil can be used to relube the filter?

I have used gasoline to clean foam filters..

Stoddard Solvent is available in North America. It seems be a proprietary
mixture of naphtha, benzene, etc.

I use kerosene on K&N filters which are made of wire mesh and cloth.

Kerosene would work fine on a foam filter and you could use less oil.

Light weight motor oil works OK.

Foam filters eventually rot and fall apart.

Gasoline or Kerosene will work to clean your foam filter. Just don't leave
the filter soaking for an extended period (read days or weeks).
Gasoline and Kerosene will both dissolve a foam filter if given enough time
to work on them (this is one of the reasons that foam filters eventually
fall apart and crumble).

But, if you just soak your filter for a few minutes and then press all of
the solvent out (don't twist your filter), and let it dry, you should be
fine.

As for oil, you can use any light-weight machine oil. Just make sure that
all excess oil is removed before reinstalling your filter. Otherwise, you
will have a gunky mess in your airbox and reduced airflow through the
filter.

kerosene is much safer...but stupidly, it's harder to find and you have to
sign for it now!
