Air Bag-Like Jacket Saves Motorcyclist's Life

POSTED: 3:59 pm EDT October 12, 2007
UPDATED: 6:25 pm EDT October 12, 2007

BALTIMORE -- While motorists who have been in car crashes often attribute the help of
air bags to saving their lives, a Maryland motorcycle rider injured in a collision is
doing the same -- for a jacket.

Joseph McPhatter, of Randallstown, was injured in a crash on Interstate 83 after
being cut off by another motorist in September. According to police, McPhatter was
ejected 100 feet, hitting the ground at an impact rate of 140 mph.

Police said that McPhatter might have been severely injured had it not been for the
Impact Jacket he was wearing -- a jacket that inflates like an air bag when a
motorcyclist is in an wreck.

McPhatter suffered from sore ribs and knees and a few other minor injuries, but it
could have been much worse, officials said.

Officials said McPhatter's crash was the first real-life incident in the U.S. where
the jacket was used.

Does that mean he was doing 140 mph on his motorcycle at the time
he got cut off ?

Good catch. Apparently the Police weren't required to take Physics 101
before getting their badges and guns ...

Does it also inflate when you drop your bike in
a parking lot ? That'd really be just the icing
on the cake.

LOL!!!
Yes it would!!! Damn that would be just what you need eh? The video is on
You Tube

If you just type in air bag jacket in the search you'll get it and a few
others.

Yes and no... But judging by the rest of your post you must only ride
on the weekends.

In a more simple terms so a phule like you can understand.
Motorcyclist ARE superior...thus it is ALWAYS the cagers fault. I
wouldn't ride as fast as my motorcycle would go if I didn't want the
cagers as far away as possible and crawling along slow just keeps them
near me.

YOU must be one of those "follow the speed limit ridgely" types.

The ONLY right of way that matters is the one you make for your self.
Split lanes, filter and for ghu's sake look out for yourself as noone
else will.

BTW you troll from idiocy. HTHHAND

I question the reporting at least. How does a motorcyclist 'hit the
ground at an impact speed of 140 mph' in traffic? The only way to do
it is to have been _going_ 140 mph and thus it _is_ his fault unless
you can find somewhere with the flow is near that speed.

And loud pipes benefitted this clown how?

I'd agree it's always their fault because they chose to hop onto a
motorcycle to begin with.

Forget about assigning fault and look at what this invention can do.

AMA Superbikes can now stage spectacular crashes just like NASCAR and
perhaps draw the same money-spending spectators!

One source reports that he was doing 70 miles an hour, "keeping up with
traffic". So maybe the reporter pulled a number out of his ass figuring the
jacket cut the damage to the equivalent of 50% or ~35mph (besides the air
bag the jacket has armor). The dimwit reporter multiplied instead of
dividing.
"One of his companions went over to him fearing the worst not even
checking for vital signs and protecting his friend by shielding cars from
his body."The reporter can't write, either.

Who cares?
"Sources" are not facts.

They're the one who chose to ride around on only 2 spoked wheels and
exposed to the great outdoors. Whose fault is it you don't install new
spokes every month? Of course, if bike dealer mechanics are as
competent as the average auto dealer mechanic, that could explain part
of it.

Ya'll like to talk about how much "freedom" you feel on a bike. Sure,
you're free to deal with the reality of physics, balance, etc.
Hopefully you don't cause anyone else injury when you become road
smear because you fell outside of that small margin of error you seem
to find appealing or choose to be oblivious to.

Ooooh, *nice* troll.

Of course, some of us have been riding for decades, at silly-eek speeds
sometimes, without a scratch, but never mind that.

Back under your bridge, now.

By this same "logic," ANYTHING that happens to
ANYONE on ANY sort of vehicle is their fault, for
choosing to leave the safety of their homes in the first
place.
