Archived from groups: alt>motorcycle>sportbike (more info?)

I just went and looked at a '99 R6 that a young gentleman in the area
has for sale. It has 27K on it and he only wants 3xxx.xx for it, which
sounds like a fairly good deal to me. He laid it over on the left side
at low speed in some gravel, but aside from those scratches,
everything else on the bike is spotless. The frame, forks, even the
headers look brand new. He just put a new chain and front sprocket on
it. I rode it around for 10 or 15 minutes, and it rode great, for the
35 or 40 mph I got it up to. I thought the low end response was great,
contrary to what I've read, but again, I didn't get near 8k and this
was the first time I've ridden an R6.

The flip side: the owner took the liberty of showing me how easy it
was to wheelie - it definitely came right up - and also ran down the
laundry list of tricks he had done here and there (tank stands,
standing wheelies, high chairs, etc...)

Now, to rephrase the question: is 27k for a '99 R6 with a healthy
resume of tricks too many miles? He did mention that he had done all
the service himself, but he spent several years building yachts and
had a nice shop set up, so he definitely knows how to turn a wrench.

Should be ok as 27k is nothing on a well serviced jap engine, but
saying that depends how its been treated, raced etc. If the engine
sounds sweet and tight then chances are it's OK. High mileage means
harder to sale when you decide to buy your R1. On the other hand so
many are crashed that picking up a low mileage second hand engine
shouldn't be much of a task if needed in the future. If in doubt
better not to buy coz u will only regret it.

Hope this helps,
Mr Caveman

P.S
I have had jap's with over 80k on the clock and they were still
running sweet.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I wouldn't go for it. It sounds pretty abused to me. If he does his own
wrenching, I would guess that means he doesn't really have any service
records to go by, so you'll just have to take his word that he's done
everything he's said.

I must admit I agree with triple. If it was me I'd probably wait for a
lower mileage example, it's not like they are rare! Saying that I do
my own servicing. I know here in the UK a service history is almost
compulsory if you want a reasonable price when moving on the bike but
I had some bad experiences with a motorcycle dealer (Motor Cycle City)
who fortunately have now gone tits up. I am a damn good mechanic
though, not your normal bodger! I'd say if the present owner has heaps
of receipts for the services he has apparently done then fine, but if
not he is more than likely telling porky pies (lying). I don't really
care on the other hand as UK second-hand bike prices suck and I'll
never get anywhere near the money I paid for the bikes back. 97 ZX9R
cost me £10,000UK when new and is now probably worth £2.500 if I'm
lucky.

Thanks all, you're probably right. I agree, there are plenty to go
around, especially this time of year. That said, is this a good time
to buy, or wait until spring?

As soon as you mentioned the stunting, I was turned off. However, if you
can get it for 3k or less, I would buy it and take your chances.

If you can afford to buy one now, buy it now. Most people are starting to
store their bikes for the winter and aren't thinking of riding. Even here
is San Diego, it seems like a daytime temp of 65F and a hint of a cloud in
the sky is enough to keep 1/2 the motorcyclists inside. In the spring,
everyone is suffering from cabin fever and wants to jump on the first bike
they see, ergo, prices shoot up.
