Post subject: '94 XJ600 Seca II tech questions.
Archived from groups: alt>motorcycles>yamaha (more info?)

Hi,

Can anyone help? I recently purchased a 1994 XJ600 Seca II. Who ever had
the bike before me did some very strange things and really didn't look after
the bike very well so I'm starting to get things sorted but have hit a few
problems.

1) The bike is drinking fuel about 150 km per tank!
2) I can't get hold of a service manual at the moment, the price here in
Australia for one is a little excessive so I'm having to save up.
3) I need to replace my fork seals
4) I need to check my shim clearances.

So can anyone tell me.

1) Where the powerband should kick in. Mine is around 3500rpm now I've
changed the air filter.
2) What part number / size / spec the jets should be in there. I have a
feeling that they may have been changed at some point.
3) What the levels the oil should be in the front forks (if you can tell me
how far from the top that would be great).
4) What the clearance levels should be for the shims.
5) Does anyone else have a vibration between 3000 and 4000 rpm? I have a
feeling it's just resonance but I'm not sure.
6) What the front and rear sprocket tooth counts should be (just want to
make sure that I've got the right ones.)
7) Where I can get a cheap service manual from in Australia.

I know that there's a lot to ask but I would be grateful if anyone can help
me. I just want to get the bike back to a nice running machine.

Thanks

Andy

Andy

whats up. Look I bought a 1992 XJ600Seca II in june of 03. but
not too much changed in those years so I tell you what i know. 1) it seems
that all i can get out of a tank of gas before dipping into the reserve is
about 100 to about 140 miles or so. I think the seca just drinks gas
compared to other bikes that is. 2)your front sprocket should be 16 teeth
and 48 for the rear. 3) I wouldn't screw with the forks the seals have a
habit of not lasting forever you know so i would say do what i did and just
have the fork seals replaced both sides of course. 4) yes everyone has that
vibration including me think of it as a normal occurence.5) about the
service manual just go online man don't bother yourself with tryin to find
one locally as it will be difficult most likely. 6)About the shims you may
have to educate me on what in the hell that is since I'm new to motorcycling
Im learning what i can when i can. I tell you about my bike its a 1992 with
only 5800 miles when i bought. I got from some rich kid whose parents bought
him a new ducati so he gave it to me for $1000 I had the carbs cleaned and
the gas tank treated from sitting for about 2 yrs. I had the fork seals
replaced because they were leaking onto the forks and thats just not cool. I
replaced the throttle cables and i just got hold to a new clutch cable. Let
me know if this helps any. Also try this website for original parts.
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bikebandit.com" target="_blank">www.bikebandit.com</a> . its where i get all my parts from.

In article <4031e732$1@dnews.tpgi.com.au>, andy.cross.DeleteThis@tpg.com.au says...

I think this is normal

See book or dealer. Dealer has the numbers, idle jets run $11.00 US
here.
 > 3) What the levels the oil should be in the front forks (if you can tell me

Goes by volume, see book. You will measure it out and put it in when you
do the seals.

 > 4) What the clearance levels should be for the shims.

I'll assume your talking about the shims on top of the lifters to set
the valve clearance.
If they are shims, and not adjustable, then you need to check the manual
and find a local dealer. They are the only ones that will have the right
shims. Sold my Suzuki because of that annoyance.

 > 7) Where I can get a cheap service manual from in Australia.

The Official Aussie Haynes distributor is
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.haynes.com/au.html" target="_blank">http://www.haynes.com/au.html</a>

the manual you want from them is
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.haynes.com/aumtrcy.html#anchor719749" target="_blank">http://www.haynes.com/aumtrcy.html#anchor719749</a>
The book is number 2145, covers 92 to 96 XJ600's
Clymer has one, too.
Here is what amazon has
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://tinyurl.com/2rors" target="_blank">http://tinyurl.com/2rors</a>

Try typing what you want into ebay. They have all this stuff on there
every time I look for them. The fork seals are running about 10 to 12
bucks on ebay right now.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

your best start would be to google.com for support groups.
this should help you get answers.
have you looked in the u.s for a haynes manual?
oil in forks is measured by volume, not distance. you need
to drain and add the correct number of cc's.
sounds like you're a bit new to bikes, please find a good
forum for your and the bike's health.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
