I had some issues with my starter as well.
I may have an older mechanism because my bike is an 82 920.
I added a couple of shims.
replaced the long screws with threaded rod
put nuts on the end of the threaded rod and tightened them against one
another.
This enabled me to get as much torque on the rods, making the pressure on
the shims greater, and adjustable.
This completely cured all my slippage.
As for the parts of the starter inside the crank case, I haven't touched
those.
I've been lucky enough to avoid getting into the crankcase.
