Archived from groups: rec>motorcycles>tech (more info?)

I was riding my dads 84 Aspencade a couple weeks ago, raving about how good a
bike it was, stopped for 30 min, restarted the bike to my dispair to find only
2 carburetors functioning.
What a piece of work, 2 carburetor CV rubber diaphrams are rotted and torn.
$140.00 each through Honda and no one stocks them. What crap. Does anyone have
another solution? No doubt the same basic Keihin carburetors have been used on
6 million motorcycles over the years, yet no way to get these parts? I'm
apparently the first one to have these go bad?
I see Keihin carb diaphrams through Yamaha are 1/3 the cost of the Honda parts,
but how can they be cross referenced to the Honda parts? Is this just a basic
Honda=popular so parts=ripoff?
Thanks, sorry to vent. This is the only Honda in my lineup and I'm not real
happy about how this is going so far.

If I was your dad, I would keep my bike off limits to you. You are bad luck,
one ride and you screwed up two carbs.

Seriously though, does the Yamaha dealer have any diaphragms in stock for a
1984 Yamaha? I would be amazed if they were even able to get them from
Yamaha for a 94 let alone an 84. Does anyone STOCK seldom used parts for
twenty year old machines? Even auto dealers only stock current fast movers
like plugs and filters. Come on, give em a break! Also are you comparing the
price of an aftermarket replacement for Yamaha to an OEM part from Honda?

No, through the same dealer, Keihin carb 1984 Yamaha Venture diaphram $57, 1984
Honda Keihin diaphram $140. I agree with your point about stocking parts for a
20 yr old machine, but I think these same diaphrams must have been in use on
all kinds of bikes for many years after that.

Or you contact NRP Carburettors in the UK. Who make replacement
diapphragms for just about anything (you have to send them your own carb
slides, mind). I got the diaphragms on my Z400 renewed, as new, for
ukp60 the pair. Kawasaki wanted ukp70 *each*.

Here is a link to a company that provides a conversion kit with carb
and manifold for the Wings. Considering the price of replacement
parts, this looks interesting.......

J.C. Whitney.com stocks parts for these carbs. I have seen the ads in
castalogs that they have sent to my house.
