Archived from groups: alt>motorcycle>sportbike (more info?)

I've been back in the saddle for 500 miles now. I am surprised at how much
fun I have had and I have no idea why I have stayed away from riding for 15
years. The SV650 really is a fun bike and I would recommend it to anyone
considering reentering the sport. Observations to this point:

1. I have been surprised at how quickly the muscle memory comes back. From
the very first ride I have been focused on my environment and not on the
mechanics of operating the bike.

2. Dusk is my favorite time to ride. Not sure why, but it is.

3. The SV is great fun on the twisties, I'm not crazy about it on highways.

4. I replaced the Michelin Pilots with D208's. By looking at the wear marks
on the tire I have realized that I lean over a little further when making
left hand turns then right hand turns. I had not noticed on the bike, but
was conscience of it today. Not sure why, but I do feel more comfortable in
left hand turns.

5. Leaves are beginning the fall off the trees and for some reason this
bothers me in the turns. I don't ever remember sliding on leaves.... Is this
a problem for anyone else?

6. Rode with a friend of mine last week. He has an 04 R1. Shiny, I want one.
Sounds wicked as I see him disappear into the distance.
On gear:

1. Bought a pair of Alpinestars GPS-3 boots. They are decent to walk in and
great on the bike. My only complaint is they are a little to big in the calf
area (even with pants tucked in).

2. Bought a Joe Rocket Blaster jacket ( I feel like I got a good deal at
$129 new from a shop on the net). I bought the perforated model and it is
comfortable in the mid-70's without the liner. One bad thing is that the
sleeves are perforated. Obviously the liner would not help this. If I had it
to do over, I'm not sure I would opt for the perforated model.

3. Looking for pants. Does anyone have suggestions for pants that would work
at the track? I guess I am asking for suggestions with knee sliders.

If you're in the US, you're riding (hopefully most of the time) on the right
side of the road. Most roads are crowned, i.e. the center is the high point
and they slope downward toward the edge of either lane. Thus you're always
riding on a bit of a slope, and this can make your left side wear slightly
further than your right.

You could also be favoring turning that way, as you suggest.

REENTERING the sport? That is an INSULT to the mighty mite. Its also a good
bike for experienced riders...excellent street machine as a matter of fact.
REENTERING!!.....Please.....

yeah, it can do highways but I'll bet an sv1000 would do them better.

sliding around on the street doesn't come highly recommended. Oncoming
traffic, deer, guiderails, rock walls, etc etc. But at the track its a RIOT.

Considering what full, one piece race suits go for on ebay, why dick around
with just the pants?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Yes. Beware. Dumped my Tiger on some leaves off-roading a couple
years ago, almost to be expected with that monster bike. Still a bit
surprising, though. If the front washes, you've had it. I don't
recall ever recovering from a substantial front slide.

If you don't mind having a V2 rocket strapped to your ass, I'm sure
they're great.

My rear tire cut loose in third gear today in pouring rain, just
accelerating (too) hard on the freeway. Liter bikes will not tolerate
shenanigans, not for a minute.

Some of us have (had) elephant calves. Feast or famine.

I'm jealous you live somewhere where it's mid-70s, early October. It
ain't so in Seattle, though fortunately it isn't yet particularly cold
here either.

At the track? Sure, two of many options, in my personal order of
preference:

- Kushitani Dragon pants
- Vanson (anything)

Neither should be more than five hundred bucks. Both are extensively
crash-tested by me and others.

Or you can cheap out and buy pants that protect great once. Many do
this, with great success, then buy the correct gear afterwards.
Whatever.

Ooops. Slip up there. You are correct. I think the bike would be fun for

This is a tough one. I think I want to try a couple of trackdays next year,
but the primary purpose would be for protection on the street. Kind of a
tough decision. I know that you generally get what you pay for, but when you
are a newbie like me, I know that I really don't know what I want or need.

Nah, just stick the race body work and Vortex clip-ons on it and a 16
tooth front sprocket. Zooming down the Interstate we go. Been using
mine set up like that for commuting 21 miles each way on Interstate and
it's fine. Have other bikes more suited to the duty
but...just...can't...stop...riding...SV. SV is too fun to leave sitting
in the garage for track use only.

This depends on your budget, and the process is similar to the old
bumper stickers that read "ass, grass, or cash...nobody rides for free".
Cheap out too much, and you may be paying with ass, although usually the
cheaper ones work fine. Once. Unless they are cheap because they are
lime green/pink. Or a model 2 years old.

Anyway, for track duty go with 1 piece leathers. I wear Kobe, and they
also make "just pants". Or get a 2 piece set for track/street. You
will end up with a closet full of different sets, anyway.

Well, again: there are worse ideas than starting with relatively
inexpensive gear. Such gear is hugely better than "none." And it
almost always protects well at least once. After that, it's a matter
of degree and opinion.
