I think I switched to the same stuff for the Kaw. Not sure about the R4T4
designation though? Anyway, I put fresh Syntec 10W/40 in before winter and all
winter long I could barely shift the damn thing. As the outdoor temps got up to
50F the bike would begin to allow me to shift it, but as soon as it went for an
extended highway run it would cool the oil to the point that the damn thing
wouldn't shift again.
I swiched to the Syntec 5W/50 and voila, smooth and easy shifting into the 40s.
Haven't had it back out below 40F though.
Interestingly, my Italian bike running 20W/50 shifts like butter regardless of
weather conditions. And she never required me to rebuild her engine either.
Me and the Japs have some issues...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 2003 sv650s oil change.. |

I do the same, oil every 1.5-2k miles, depending on how the gear shift feels. Filter every other oil
change. OEM filters.

My SV650s has a spin on, just like the poster. but I see what you mean. The
filter, even the spin on, is at the bottom of the case, and may open up for
all the oil to spill out.

I would change the oil not to top it up. The by product from the combustion
will contaminate the oil even if it looks clean. Thats why change oil every
three months or ### many miles/kms. I am sure I read somewhere one of the by
products of comustion will increase the PH level (acid) in the oil and if
not change may possible damage bearing surfaces.
I was shocked when I saw in the manual not to change filter every oil
change. That just seems to go against the grain. So does anyone have tips on
where to get a good aftermarket oil filter in Canada? The OEM ones are way
over priced.

After disassembling a few filters and finding almost no foreign particals I also decided to change
my filter every other oil change. Mobil 1 15/50 @ 2k, and using a OEM filter. I'm approaching the
fifth filter change with no noticable problems-- Bare in mind that this is no different (for the
filter) then a filter and oil change every 4k...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 2003 sv650s oil change.. |

I go OEM for the cartridge filters and buy the Purolator PureOne at
the local auto parts shack for the spin ons. The one for the Mazda
Miata is a direct x-ref for several thousand Japanese Sportbikes and
the Triumphs.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 2003 sv650s oil change.. |

Do you think that's because of the dry clutch on the Duc vs. wet clutch on
the ZRX?

Hey, I said the motor would run, not that the frame and body would be
intact. But yeah, no more infield plowing for me and the R1.

Don't think I haven't considered it. If I weren't already paying off a
mortgage on the first one (doh!), I probably would do just that. I saw a red
one the other day and could hardly tear my eyes off it.

The ZRX clutch seems to engage and disengage the one gear it's in just fine. I
often had to pry the gear up with the heel of my boot to get into second and
forget it unless it was stoplight to stoplight traffic where the oil would warm
up and allow a hard fought shift into third from time to time.

I saw the silver one a couple weeks back. Didn't care for the goofy artsy
fartsy green/blue plastic covers. Saw a blue one today and it looked much
nicer. Even the stickers had this cool brushed aluminum look. Very nice.
Guess I'll have to wait for a Hooter's bike night to see a red one. They never
even seem to make it to the dealer's floor.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 2003 sv650s oil change.. |

See, with any other issue people will say "follow the manual, unless you
think you know more than the engineer who designed it."
Yet when it comes to oil changes, we happily ignore the manual and
overdo it.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 2003 sv650s oil change.. |

I'll bet:
a. There is way more than one engineer responisble for the design of your bike.
b. None of them wrote the manual.
Interestingly, my latest auto manual said there is no specific "break in"
procedure to be followed, but suggested varying the RPM regularly for the first
1k miles or so.
None of my cars have EVER required me to do a 600 mile service on them. All of
my bikes have.
Must use different metals and seals in bikes and cars, eh? Them engineering
rascals.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 2003 sv650s oil change.. |
