ok I know I'll get slammed by hey I'll ask anyway. Comon sence tells me
change to oil filter each time you dump the oil. However the manual show oil
change every 6000kms and change the filter every 18000kms (3rd time you
change the oil). Did I miss the boat on this or is my manual wrong?

Regardless what the manual says, change the filter every time. If you
don't, its like you taking a shower, but then putting your dirty underwear
back on. It might work, but it just doesn't FEEL RIGHT.

its right, but almost everyone changes the filter with the oil. cheap
insurance that way.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

but then the underwear is broken in just right. kind of like an old pair of

Actually, I would think that you could get away with changing the filter and
topping off the oil (if you have synthetic oil) instead of changing the oil
every time. Is there any truth to this? I know we are talking about a rather
small amount of oil so the cost is not an issue, I was just wondering.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

You know....I'm a big fan of cheap. But I'm not a big fan of a poorly built
product, with the designers knowing its inferior, and then marketing it as
though it isn't.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Troy, I'm just trying to rationalize using Fram's in both my bikes
without knowing beforehand they were junk. I'll only go 3500 miles
between next change and the oil is the best or close that I've found
Syntec 5-50 R4T4. This oil makes the old Sprint shift like a Japanese
bike and the GSXR like soft butter. Anyway, I'll let you know if I
throw a rod holding either bike on the rev limiter instead of shifting
to third gear (lazy) on a couple of my regular turns. The Sprints oil
check glass at >40K still looks golden colored until 2500 or so into
an oil change.

Next change I'll go back to OEM filters. What do you think?

I'm convinced, unless these bike are raced, their drive trains are
very rugged. I don't do intentional wheelies and baby my clutches.

I think you're probably right, except for those unfortunate few who end up
with a lemon right out of the box. Stuff just doesn't fit right and
eventually ends up breaking.

I expect my motor to run until about a week past Judgment Day.

autozone carries some STP motorcycle filters that seem pretty robust, and
dont have any stigma attached to em.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

that would be the recommended maintenance. Most guys will figure what
the hell, and change the filter. It's cheap insurance.

Depending on whether your bike uses internal or external (spin-on)
filters, this might be impossible. If you remove an internal filter,
almost all the oil comes out just by opening things up.

Junk? Poorly built perhaps...no room for error, particularly on high temp,
high performance engines perhaps, but junk? The problem is, lots of ex-Fram
users were once Fram users, and finding anyone who actually had one come
apart and ruin an engine is tough. So they must be working for MOST people
who use them.

Haven't seen a bad OEM yet. Also, EMGO was mentioned as a reasonably built
alternative, but I ony found them at Dennis Kirk.

Its heat and time that might cause a problem with the filter...which...when
it starts leaving bits of paper and glue in various oil galleys throughout
the engine that cause the problem. And I imagine that track days or canyons
in the heat and at higher rpms are tougher on engine oils than wheelies.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I change mine with every second oil change. I change the oil every 2 to 3k
miles. Filters should easily last for 4 to 6k miles.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
