I am new to harleys. I just purchased a 2001 sportster 883; but, this
bike was supposed to have been boosted to 1200 cc's. I got it for a
good price and bought it on the spur of the moment--since it was such a
good price.
How can I double check and make sure it has the 1200 cc jugs on it?
Also, the guy I purchased it from gave me a much larger tank, probably
off a larger harley--with this bolt on without modifications?
This bike seems to have a carburetor, is it possible to bolt on fuel
injectors/manifold?
Finally, does anyone know where I can get access to manuals/papers/sites
on the net on how to service/repair this beast?
Thanks in advance,
John >> Stay informed about: 2001 sportster |

You're not too familiar with fuel injection I take it. It won't be that
simple. Wiring changes, fuel pump... Sometimes it's best to leave well
enough alone. >> Stay informed about: 2001 sportster |

I remember this coming up in this group in the last year and there were
a lot of answers. Give google a search. IIRC it isn't that simple to
check.

read the thread titled "how can you tell if its a 883 or 1200 sporty"
started on 5/31/2007. b.t.w. there is probably nothing that can't be
answered in here if you will look back a few months rather than asking the
same question that has already been answered.

can't tell without looking at it. should be obvious if you look at both and
do a little measuring.

yes, but why? it would be a *lot* of work. if you need to pour more fuel
on the fire just put an s&s carb on it.

go to the dealer and buy a service manual. you bought the bike cheaply
enough, you can afford the manual.

as soon as you get through buying my morning cup of coffee go to the faq and
read a little about how things work in here. if you play nice folks will
help a lot.
http://rmhfaq.com/
hope this helps and remember. buy lots of drinks.

I've seen two statements in this bar which make me smile. One being the one
above, although this is seen much more infrequently:
"you bought the bike cheaply enough, you can afford the manual"
And something to the effect of:
"you could afford to pay $20K for a bike, shirley you can afford the manual"
It makes me wonder if there's anyone out there that bought a bike that
_couldn't_ afford a manual. <sfsf>

and that is the reason i like to keep a little cash laying around. lots of
deals will get by you while your waiting for the bank to open and there is a
limit on cash withdraws from the teller machine. i missed a deal on a used
road king a couple of months ago because somebody showed up with cash before
the ol lady could drive to columbia. i got the call and said cash was on
the way. the ol lady was almost to greenville when we got a call that it
had just rode out of the driveway.
the frame that i am building right now and about half the parts came to me
on a saturday because one of the local m/c's was sitting in jail and his ol
lady was a few dollars short for bail money. last rolling chassis came to
me because someone was short on rent and needed cash at that moment. half
my guns have been bought in the same manner.

Could be the seller was short on cash. Just to be safe, I would verify
the VIN on the bike and whats listed on the title match. Maybe I'm just
a bit suspicious by nature but I will guarantee you don't want to be
"inconvenienced" at some point on a trip should the VIN come up "hot".
I have never given it much thought about DMV checking the VIN. It would
make sense they would confirm a vehicle is not stolen before titling it.

I don't disagree with this. But since its the exception rather than the
rule, and as skeptical a person that I am, I would just look at it very
carefully. Since DMV titled it to you, that bodes well. >> Stay informed about: 2001 sportster |

in georgia the number gets run through the georgia dmv computer when you get
your tag but not NCIS. it will only ring a bell if it was stolen here in
our state. i have a buddy in the S.O. come by and run everything i buy
through the NCIS computer and then fill out an inspection form. that way if
anything is ever said i have written proof that i took every precaution
possible.
