why do you need the speedometer in the first place. it is not a troll.
I was driving my car with dead one for over 2 years and never got caught
and learnt to felt speed very accurately.
but agree - instruments feeding you with false data - it is irritating.
I can not stand my FZ-1 %7 error either.

The published top speeds of 186 are radar gun accurate. The magazines
that test the bikes not only do not go by the speedometer, they
typically publish the speedometer error, albeit usually only at 60
mph. >> Stay informed about: 1st extended ride on the new SV-650 |

That's next!
Did you read about the national tests being conducted to charge road
taxes by miles traveled rather than per gallon of gas consumed?
Government installed GPS devices that record every mile you travel,
report back to the government, and then you are taxed accordingly. >> Stay informed about: 1st extended ride on the new SV-650 |

The reason given for the test is that as fuel mileage of the national
fleet has gone up, even though fuel sales are nominally up, sales
taxes are close to flat. Otoh, miles driven per vehicle per year has
gone WAY up. So, tie taxation to the fastest rising indicator.
Voila! More money in the goverment's pockets and less in yours and
mine.
Wonder if they'll charge motorcycles the same tax rate per mile
traveled as, say, Hummers? I'm sure we do just as much damage to the
roads.... >> Stay informed about: 1st extended ride on the new SV-650 |

I have a GPS too and I was kidding with Vaughn. Unfortunately,
Timsey's got the sense of humor of Leona Helmsley. The GPS doesn't
show when it was going a certain speed, so LEGALLY it would be rather
hard for anyone to use it against you.
I've heard rumors of the "black box" too, but from the cost reduction
measures required of the engineers I know in the auto biz, loading
enough non-volatile memory to hold the history of the vehicle's speed
is probably not gonna happen. >> Stay informed about: 1st extended ride on the new SV-650 |

How long before cars and motorcycles are required to have "black boxes" like
airplanes.?
The technology is rather trivial that would allow remote reading of the data
(time / location / speed) and the government could just send you the ticket.
The trucking industry already uses this type of tech to monitor their
drivers. The cabbies in NY are already facing GPS monitoring.
Of course they'd never implement a "speed limiter". It would be just as
easy, but then they'd forgo the revenue or opportunity to put in you in jail
(prisons are a growth industry).
Unfortunately, I think Saddle is correct. An overzealous prosecutor could
subpenoe your gps data and use it against you in a court of law.

FYI, It might not show it in the UI but I guarantee the entry is in the db
with a modified date/time.

I've never liked that "maximum speed" feature. At all. Plus, it
lies. When we rode back from Daytona one year, George's showed a
maximum trip speed of 178 point something, on his Harley. Sure, the
thing is fast for an Ultra (it's got an SE103 plus a little hidden
extra) but it's not *that* fast! >> Stay informed about: 1st extended ride on the new SV-650 |

That benefits fuel ineffcient vehicles. Good idea!
There was idea floated here in Utah to combat uninsured drivers. Let's call
it "socialized" car insurance. Basically you pay for insurance through a
gas sales tax. Thus if you buy gas you are insured. Voila, no uninsured
drivers! The state buys insurance through All State, New York Life, etc...
Drunk, bad drivers still get their licenses revoked of course.
At first glance, I like the idea. I don't drive much, it could save me
money. But that's selfish... >> Stay informed about: 1st extended ride on the new SV-650 |

Pffft! They complained about the cost of seat belts, padded dashes,
catalytic convertors, 5 mph bumpers, safety glass, etc...
I'm too lazy to the math, but time, location (lat/long), speed is less than
10 bytes. Sample once a second equals 600 bytes a minute. 24*60*600 =
864,000 bytes a day? Ok sample every 5 secs = 172k byte day. So a year's
data takes 172 * 365 = 63,072,000 bytes? 63 meg? That's pennies!
The car already has a cpu and data buses.
