Archived from groups: alt>motorcycle>sportbike (more info?)

By extended I mean a 25 mile mostly freeway loop throught the Phoenix
East Valley. I'll do 100+ miles tomorrow.

The biggest irritant (brought my GPS portable unit) was the gross
speedometer error, so common on today's bikes. My worst error was at
an indicated 105 which was really only 93 or a 12 MPH error @ >100MPH.
The error decreased as the speed went down but was still 7 MPH at a
real 70MPH. That's about the only negative thing about the bike I have
to say.

Due to it's power & weight distribution it actually feels lighter and
closer to the ground than the little RZ-350 but the speedo on that
old beast was dead-on. Next the FI has vastly inproved the little
SV-650 with it now being able to idle away from a stop light without
any initial throttle input. My 00 carbed model was kind of
herky..jerky off the line. The vibration (you can still tell it's a
twin by the bipe and gentle power pulses) but it was never an
irritation, even at about the 105 indicated speed. I don't know if it
was the speedo error or the actual gearing but it now seems to be
geared longer legged than my 00 SV. The brakes are vastly inproved
than before as well. I can't speak for brake fade but the initial bite
is like my old Sprint with SS lines and HH pads. Oh and this is the
ist bike since loosing my right lower leg that I can actually
effectively use the rear brake by just moving my foot forward and
genty pushing straight down. The midrange torque is as I remember my
old 00 or wheelie prone if to jerk the throttle open in 1st or second
gear. The suspension is set pretty soft or fine on the Freeway but
I'll have to see how it feels in the canyon tomorrow. That's about all
and next is to mark the big tack with real speedo numbers. Oh, it has
a temp guage now but the low fuel light is still just an icon that
comes on. Also there are two trip odometers for trip and oil changes I
guess. No center stand is kind of a bummer with even the little RZ-350
sporting one. This meams I have to park in the street and back it in
my slooped driveway. a bitch on the old half heart.

Exactly. That's why Vaughn's 140 mph really only equated to 107
mph...a full 1 mph slower than Timsey's Harley's GPS.

Mechanical cable linkage vs electronic encoder? I hate to see what
that fly by wire's gonna be like!

How would you ever get it up on a centerstand?

Good Report Bob,
Why not ride it into the garage and back it into the street?
Is that possible? Glad to hear about the rear brake too!

On the fly speedo correction. It's supposedly plug-n-play with most modern
bikes. They list the SV650 on the compatibility list:

http://www.speedohealer.com/download/SH_Application_list_en.pdf

I don't have one of these, but I kind of want one.

See the part in Bob's post about a sloped driveway. I'm guessing it slopes
down from the street to his garage. Backing uphill with 1.5 legs would be
tough.

Good idea, I,ll try it. With the RZ I just spun it around on the
center stand. With the Sprint I'd have to back out the truck and turn
it around in the garage. Now with two bikes I cant do that anymore.

I changed front tire profile to a 70 series and it made mine a fair amount
better, but I only know the difference at lower speeds. I'll have to break
out my GPS and check it at 70 sometime.

Posssibly this might help but I also had an idea that if I had the
other bike out of the garage, I could lift it up on the side stand
(balanced) and swing it around in the opposite direction that might
work.
I'll figure something out.

Thanks Denise. Maybe I'll muster up the courage to do a track day

Troy mine has 70's on them already. The best way to fix it is a black
box but I'm just going to mark the hot spots (45, 65, 75 &TS) on the
tachometer in permanent black marker in 6th gear based on the GPS
reading.

All that speedo error is really annoying. My modern and japanese car
is dead on as well. Why they universally underestimate speed on a
ratio is not only frustrating, it is unethical.

Kind of like the so called "gentlemen's agreement" among the big four
to limit production speeds to 300km/hr. Strange logic.....

I've become hooked and use a GPS all the time on bikes now, the speed
is only one of many useful facts it keeps. And the freedom to go
explore is enhanced with one when you head out into unknown backroads.

Keep breaking her in - and having fun!

Don't forget to show the Staties all its neat features when you next
get pulled over. Particularly the "max speed" page.

Yes it is. It's really a PITA at interstate speeds. If I do an indicated
70 I get passed by everything. If I keep with the flow of traffic my speedo
will read about 85, but experience tells me I'm probably not going that
fast. Guess I'll drag out my 1990s GPS and fig it out.

What's strange about it? Just a little self-preservation from Gov't
intrusion.
IIHS at it again:

If 186 MPH is too slow for ya, you can always get around it. But you seem
ok with 140 Wink Or is that actually 124mph...

Hmmm, considering speedo error, I wonder what they're (ZX14, busa) really
doing when they top out at an indicated 186. Maybe 165? Not like you can
ask your average 'busa owner what his bike really does (on GPS) and get an
honest answer.
