Post subject: 1983 Honda Shadow 750 Problem: Starter Clutch or Solenoid?
Archived from groups: rec>motorcycles (more info?)

I have a 1983 Honda Shadow 750 with a starting problem;

The starter appears to not be 'catching'. Each time I hit the starter
button, it will only catch for about a half a second before the engine
stops turning over and the starter just spins. It does this
consistently. It almost always catches for about a half a second,
every 15 or 20 times it won't catch at all. I just hear the starter
spinning.

I've ruled out the battery by trying this against a new one. I called
the local Honda shop and they suggested that it could be the starter
clutch. I've looked it up in my repair manual and have decided that I
can do the work, but want to make sure I am fixing the right problem
before I buy a $40 rotor puller (aka an expesnive bolt) and the
necessary part(s). Will it be evident that the clutch is broken when
I take the engine cover off? Will I need to replace the 'clutch' and
the 'outer clutch' (Nbrs 5 and 4 respectively on the below schematic
link), or just one or the other?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, it is definitely the starter clutch.

No to the 'evidently broken' question. The starter clutch doesn't have
to be worn hardly at all before it will slip. When I replaced the S-C
on my KZ650, it looked to be nearly new and seemed to work fine when I
operated it by hand. But when you put real torque on it, it would slip.

Without a better drawing, I can't say for sure- but I wouldn't be cheap
about it, it's not a job you want to have to do over again if you can
help it. Get both sides of the clutch interface and you'll sleep better
knowing it's all new.

As I said, it take surprisingly little wear for one of these to start
slipping, so even if you think one of the parts is like new, I'd replace
both halves.

What oil have you been using in it? Some oils will cause the starter
clutch to slip, I have heard...

Thanks for the help. I'll replace both pieces. I don't want to do
the same job twice.
