This morning all was well until I tried to move up into 2nd gear.

I must add that I have been enjoying months of trouble-free
riding until today.

I could not shift out of first gear, there was simply NO movement
in the gear change lever, the linkages were all loose and active,
but NO movement on the lever at the box.

The problem eased off as I was returning home (obviously I hadn't
gone far) and the selection process returned to normal.

First thing to check was the oil, and it's all there, full and in
good nick, ie clear and rich looking.

I hate hit and miss problems, can anyone out there shed some
light on why this may have happened?

And it's on topic!

Box out and strip it. Sounds like a bit of selector or cog milling
around.
