FS: 1982 Yamaha 650 Special, Pristine Condition

You won't be disappointed in this one. Except for some wear on the
front brake rotor, this motorcycle looks like it just rolled off the
showroom floor.

1982 Yamaha 650 Heritage Special (XS650SJ)

650cc parallel twin with lots of low-end torque and nearly
indestructible engine

Black with wire wheels and black fenders

$2750 Pristine condition, only 2060 original miles.

This is not a restored motorcycle. It is all original except for
battery, hydraulic brake hoses, tires and tubes. (I still have the
original brake hoses, tires and tubes with mfg dates on them)

I will deliver up to 100 miles.

Photos can be seen at http://www.650choppers.com/TomDellinger2.html

With the tremendous popularity of this motorcycle, there is a wealth
of information located at http://www.650motorcycles.com/ and other
sites such as parts, photos, maintenance information and repair
manuals

an ad in walneck's classic cycle trader is a wise
investment. it will sell quickly, those a popular bikes and
pristine restos run in the 3-4k range.
i have 72, unrestored with 30k miles. it's a clean, decent
bike and i wouldn't sell it. it is one of the most fun to
ride bikes i have. i changed the swingarm out to get rid of
the "garden gate" flex and it corners like a dream.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

The only area really to watch on these is alternator rotors. The rotors
wear out on them, and is just about the only thing thwt does. Sometimes
this can be alleviated or cured in the short term with new brushes, but
ultimately you will be replacing the rotor which is an expensive and
increasingly difficult proposition. This is why very often when you see one
in a scrap yard the ignition is gone off of it. Please note that i have had
5 xs/tx 650s over the last 20 or so years and have done everything from
chopping to dirt track style with them. Lastly, no offence e but i have
never paid 3000 dollars for one, not even the brand new one i bought in 81.
YOu should have been around when i sold off my ex wifes (74 tx, 75 xs and a
78 chopper rolling chassis for 150 bucks)..now THERE was a sale...LOL<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

sure, but when did you last buy a nos vintage bike?
prices are moving because people like you and i hacked them.
cherry stockers are rare. good runners are cheap. bought a
nice 76 for 500. never had alterator problems. the 70-74's
had weak starters....that silly compression release was a
bad hack.
what i need badly are sr stators. no one is rewinding and
they are prone to failure. if you hear of any that aren't a
rip, please lmk.
i always miss the good sales....though i did get two
bonnies,a triple and a thunderbolt for 2 grand 3 years ago.
all ran. all were hacked. i only have a nice tr6r now.
traded a bonnie for it.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I'm not sure but i think a few other bikes of the same vintage use the same
stator. Perhaps an xs 400, tx model, or a dirty ol' rd. Also there used to
be a company called Ricks tricks that did electrical for old yammies. i used
to buy my brushes from him and he used to supply remanufactured
rotors/stators. I used to source ricks tricks products thru dennis kirk.
Have you thought about going to your local automotive rewinder and inquired?
sometimes they (and you) can get lucky and re-flux magnets as well as rewind
etc...just a thought. Actually i thought of you a couple of hours ago when
i passed a place that had a 78 xt500 in good unrestored condition for 500
bucks US (buddy couldnt sell it cuz everyone was afraid of the big kick
only thumper..LOL)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

sr stators are very peculiar and not used on any other.
are you thinking of ricky stator? they no longer do sr's.
wheres the xt? tell the guide to post an ad on the
thumperpage and it will fly for that price.
but xt stators are different. i would buy it if i didn't
have a 77 i just finished. but it has points.
a swedish guy sent me directions to hand wind, apparently
the only way for an sr and why no one wants to.
the only guy i found wants 200 to rewind and only does sr's
when he has no other work. so you can wait a year. i may
have to learn to do it.
xt's are not mean to start...if you know the drill. mine has
a cam and 10 1/2 to one piston. do it wrong and lose a
leg...i love it. i leave the key in it when i ride in town.
(g)
the magnets never go, it's always the wires...especially
here in the desert.
but thanks. any music you have never been able to find?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Oh shit....music. How many times have you thought.."i must pick up that
album" then stand in the record store drawing a complete blank? Never been
able to find....hmmmm perhaps some old dixie dregs, duane allman's anthology
1...geee way to put me on the spot.....have to think about that one. But as
to hand winding....a buddys dad has an electric motor shop and in fact
tought me some hand winding a million years ago, but i mostly forget. i
know here there is a automobile alternator specific shop and that is all
they do is rewinds on alternators.. ( some alternators for the new cars are
insanely expensive to buy new) I think this guy will do a bike, and in fact
thrives on doing the different or difficult...perhaps i'll look into it.
As to them (500 singles) being hard to start..doesnt scare me..bring it up
on compression, sneak the kicker right to the top of its stroke, and kick
through..with total conviction...LOL I found them a dream compared to my
buddy's 440 victor. And my much modded 480 cr was almost thumper wicked to
kick...plus i weigh 250# plus.....the yammies were a very well thought out
motor...did you guys get the srx in the US?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
