I hate to keep harping on it but damn near the only thing that seems to wear
out on the xs 650 is the rotor and/or stator. The rotors wear where the
brushes touch the face of the rotor ( apparently cleaning it up on the lathe
doesnt work, i tried it),and the stators lose magnetism. All of my xs 650s
(74, 75 77, 78,80 were marked for disposal due to charging issues. very
often in the case of rotor wear, new brushes will recify the problem...for a
while<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

another thing i did to help an aging and marginal electrical system was put
a small single pole toggle switch in the headlight bucket. It allowed me to
turn off the headlight during daytime city street driving (legal in canada)
another thing you can do to help the 650 is coils. They are notorious for
coils getting weak with age and a decent set of aftermarket coils is money
well spent<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

and unlike sr stators, xs650's can be rewound by machine, so
chops will do them.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

If you remove the rotor , this will tend to de-magnitize the residual
magnetism in the field ...you may have to re-polarize the field coil
.....easily done with a battery
charger or battery....normal charge voltage in a car is 13.8 to 14.2
volts... let me know the out come as I am in the process of restoring my
1972 XS2 which I purchased new in 1972 at the tender age of 19....George

rotor coil should have 6 Ohm, replace if less than 4 Ohm.
brushes are solded with short wires, they wear up before end is reached.
