| I have been thinking about trading my 02 Gold Wing 1800 for the new 05
K1200LT as this whole frame thing is starting to bother me. I know
BMW is not perfect either, but the BMW just seems more polished all
around.
Any one offer any advice?

Six of one, etc.
Wing has a bit more power (although not sure about the '05) and the K12
is a bit lighter on its feet.
Personally, I have an '01 K12LT. And the weird thing is, one of my good
friends who I'm teaching a BRC with this week has an '01 (?) GL1800. Both
bikes are almost the same color. Neither of us has any complaints, but
he also avoided the frame bugaboo.

In case you were unaware of it, there is a second frame crack issue under
investigation. Its been found outside the VIN rage of the earlier frame
weld issue. Some GL1800 owners went into denial at first but credible
people in the community have agreed that some are indeed there. HSTA and
Honda are looking at it.

Can't say I paid much attention, as I'm happy with my K12LT, and my newest
GoldWing is a 1981:) I will pass the information on.

I will.
Depending on what resolution of the new rear frame cracks are, any of the
post 1500 GLs may take a major hit in resale. Resale value should not be
the prime determinate for choosing a bike, but knowing you will take a bath
on a bike that expensive has to figure in the choice. Hopefully Honda
realizes this and will take action to preserve the flagship model's
reputation.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 05 BMW K1200LT or Honda GL1800? |

And that's not even taking into account downtime if the frame cracks
and if Honda will cover it. The 1800 is a great bike, but I dunno
anymore with all the crap happening with it. Oh, and i speak as an
EX-GL1800 owner myself! Loved the ride, but definitely has issues.
OTOH, I know nothing about anything to do with BMW other than they're
TALL. I couldn't sit on one and be comfortable. I are inseam
challenged! <g>

This is my problem. Should I keep riding it, take to the dealer have
them look it over and show me how to check for this, and just keep
checking every time i ride? i am going to take a hit of at least
$2500 if I unload this thing now and go with a new K1200LT. But it is
one less thing to worry about while I am riding. And I ride very
agressively on the Wing too which makes me even more worried...
I love the Wing. There is no touring bike which can match its raw
power...the new K1200LT has 116hp vs 118hp, but the Wing stomps it in
torque BMW has 88ft/lbs vs 120ft/lbs in the Wing. Sure the BMW can
rip through the twisties faster than the Wing.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 05 BMW K1200LT or Honda GL1800? |

And you'll take a hit on the K12LT as soon as you ride it off the lot.
Resale sucks on them because BMW continues to undercut the used market
with their low interest financing. Stock up on rear drive seals and
always carry a full set with you on trips. When you final drive fails
there will surely be none available in country and you'll be looking at
a 2 week wait for parts if you don't have them with you.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 05 BMW K1200LT or Honda GL1800? |

If it weren't for the financing deals, I wouldn't have a K12LT now:)
Not to minimize the rear seal problems with the K12, but I imagine
that a failure of them is far less dangerous than a failure of
a frame weld on a Wing.
